Greenies Package Design

While the focus for pet treats has been on using natural ingredients, the same cannot be said for the packaging. Plastic packaging is a major contribution to the amount of waste in our environment. They often do not get recycled correctly or are simply thrown away. This affects our beaches and landscapes, wildlife, oceans and is threatening the Earth. If changes are not made to help reduce the amount of waste humans create, then it might be too late. Greenies current packaging is made primarily out of polyethylene which is non-recyclable. This creates a ton of unnecessary waste. If the product is made out of natural ingredients, why not make the package out of natural and sustainable materials.

Goal

To design new packaging that uses environmentally friendly/sustainable materials.

Ideation

When coming up with ideas I had to consider what would be appealing to the target audience, and how to make the packaging sustainable. I knew I wanted the package to have a dog on it but I wanted it to stand out. I ended up with the idea of having the box be a dog rather than just having a picture of a dog on the packaging like so many other companies do. This way my design would stand out and be appealing to dog-lovers!

Revision & Feedback

A paper prototype was created as a test to see if the die-lines were correct. After the testing revisions were made based off of feedback to improve the final design. Changes were made to the font sizes, die-lines, and opacity of colours.

Design

The design of the box is made to look like a dog and has a face on the inside of the top flap. This connects with the consumer as they are buying the treats for their dog. The wrap features a more sophisticated natural look with the floral designs on the side. This is to connect the product and packaging with the natural aspects of it, as well as providing the consumer with a choice between which design they want to have shown. Natural colours were used to enforce the healthy aspects of the product and packaging. For typography, a sans serif font was chosen to reflect the clinical nature of the dental treats.

Results

My design stands out amongst competitors and is compelling to dog-lovers! Overall, the new packaging significantly reduces the amount of waste caused by the previous packaging and helps support Greenie’s natural product by using natural, biodegradable resources.
